Extinction Editor SDK Update!

It's been years since our last update to the PCE editing tools, this major release brings the SDK on Steam up to date with the latest content from Primal Carnage: Evolution!

Every player who owns Primal Carnage: Extinction on Steam should automatically have access to the Extinction Editor SDK application in their library, for making and testing custom content.

There are community guides on best practices and how to upload to Steam Workshop you can find on our Discord channel, simply look in the pinned messages of either the Skins or Extinction-Editor chats (along with a bunch of useful asset packs and other resources).

NOTE: if you were already in the middle of creating a map / skins or other custom content, you may wish to backup your files before updating to avoid installation errors or your work being deleted before updating!

EDITOR UPGRADES

Better Stability, Less Confusion

The first thing you'll notice upon loading up the Extinction Editor SDK now is that there's actually a splash screen image and a progress bar for compiling shaders.

This is a long overdue fix and is way better than the editor silently loading in the background for who knows how long, as it did previously. We've got rid of the annoying popups that would bug you every time the editor opened as well.

Our chief programmer, looter, has worked to improve SDK stability across the board, fixing numerous crashes with the editing tools. You can also choose to run the editor with the new Vulkan renderer as well, which in many cases grants better performance.

Among other fixes, you can now import and listen to WAV audio files without issue. Mappers can also build lighting on their custom levels again to see what they actually look like, instead of being stuck with unbuilt lights and shadows.

NEWEST CONTENT

As of this new SDK upgrade, all of the latest content is included in the editor files. Everything from the latest community maps to the new playable dinosaurs. Both environment and cosmetic content use the latest shaders and techniques, being much more optimized than before.

If you've used the editor in the past, it may take a moment to get used to the new setup for things like dinosaur skins. Always follow the example of other material instances for the dino you're creating content for. You should usually never need to override any texture other than the diffuse overlay when making a standard skin. All skins are instances that inherit their parent properties for the sake of consistency, so don't change any other options unless you really need to!

Assets for the upcoming Sandbox dinosaurs are included for creators who wish to get a jump start on making content for those. While some aspects of these creatures may change slightly in the run up to release, their art is pretty much final, so you can make skins and mutations with confidence for Brachi, Iguanodon, Para, Stego and Compy.

!EXPERIMENTAL CONTENT!

Please note that as this SDK is very much up-to-the-minute, there will be some assets that are still work in progress or experimental. We are in the process of testing and polishing the Dual Repeaters weapon, for example. Other guns such as the Flame Slicer and Spear Launcher are far from ready to go just yet.

This technically also applies to the Sandbox dinosaurs, which are in the midst of various gameplay tweaks and ongoing bug fixes in Open Testing currently.

MORE SOON…

Other content such as the new announcer system, skillshots, intel etc. are still in the process of being ported to PCE on PC. You can expect more SDK updates as those features are rounded out and polished up. We're not going to wait years between editor patches again now that the pipeline for building them is finally fixed!

We're delighted to finally have another SDK build out publicly, and look forward to seeing what the community creates with access to the latest assets and tools.

Be sure to share what you're cooking up on the official Discord!
The game's Steam Workshop has seen a bit of cleaning up lately as well...

Thankyou for playing!
